Central Park: in Sunshine and in Snow

Hello Blog-Readers,

Cara and Polly reporting in again from New York in it's autumn gorgeousness!

Well we've just had two very exciting and full-on days based around Central Park. Day 16 brought bags of sunshine but a cold temperature and Day 17 just brought oodles of snow (the New Yorkers weren't happy about this but we were like two little children seeing snow for the first time, it was so exciting and such a surprise as we certainly didn't expect snow while here so that was a big bonus - thanks Mother Nature, you rock!)

DAY 16:
After our rainy day yesterday we woke today to beautiful blue skies but very cold air. The cosy warmth of our heated apartment misled us and we left for our bicycle adventure in Central Park without gloves or enough layers, but once we put our pedals to the metal we soon warmed up!

Central Park looked so beautiful in the sun and all the autumn colours in the trees, which weren't out when we first saw it two weeks ago, are now well and truly spectacularly showing themselves.

We did a couple of laps of the park and took so many photos. Cara was very over Polly stopping to photograph each squirrel by the end of our ride! And we handled the whole biking on the right hand side of the road thing pretty well too. Although the air was really cold it was so lovely and fresh (a special sort of fresh when going past the horses and carriages!) that you didn't mind getting cold hands and ears. It was so cool to be on bikes getting around Central Park and we loved all the downhill runs where you get the wind in your hair, it was exhilarating! Seriously recommend this if you like bike riding it was such a great experience.

On the way home (and feeling a bit jelly-legged) from our bike ride we stumbled upon another beautiful bakery that sold amazingly yummy large macarons. Mmmm, the pistachio and caramel were tasty but we weren't sold on the carrot cake flavor macaron but we will definitely be going back there to try out some of the other flavors we didn't get to today!

DAY 17:
Today was like Christmas had come early when we looked outside our 6th floor window to see the start of an amazing snowfall - woo hoo, it was so exciting!!

We learnt our lesson from yesterday and got all rugged up for our winter wonderland adventure. Before playing in the snow in Central Park we first got another slice of some big city culture and spent a few very enjoyable hours wandering around the Metropolitan Museum. In that time we probably only saw about 5% of the museum but loved what we did see. To be honest, we were too eager to get back to the snow to stay any longer. But here's a sample of what we loved at the Met.

On the way home from the Met we walked through Central Park. Immediately we kept hearing the noise of mini avalanches as the weight of the snow kept causing branches to make great cracking sounds then tumble to the ground. We did find it a little scary to have all these big branches constantly falling down but it was quite an adventure as well, not to mention the challenges of avoiding massive slushy puddles, not skidding over and just not getting lost as the park is so huge and the complete white-out from the snow easily disorients you.

So as you can see we went a bit trigger-happy with photos in Central Park. It was just so amazing for us because we'd been biking around it only 24 hours before and where there had been lawns of lush green clover was now pure blankets of perfect snow. What a difference a day makes.

What surprise will New York have in store for us next? We'll all have to wait and see what tomorrow brings. Until then ...... Cara and Polly over 'n' out. xx
